For many years, GCC has partnered with NYC high schools to start Global Concerns clubs and to help students find creative ways to spread awareness of global issues and to take action. Winners of Concern Writing Competition 2011

The votes are in! The winners of Concern’s creative writing competition have been announced.

This year, the competition has truly become worldwide. We received 776 entries from 39 countries spanning five continents. Thanks to all those who took part. We had a very high standard of entries and our judges, top journalists from Ireland and the US, had an extremely difficult task in deciding the winners.

We started the competition to provide an opportunity for people to let us know, in a creative and engaging way, their thoughts and views on a wide range of development issues.

GCC students educate their peers about childhood malnutrition!

The very foundation of Global Concerns Classroom is that youth have the power to make a real difference in the world.  Nowhere was this idea more clear than during Michelle Obama’s recent trip to South Africa.  After all, even to follow the First Lady’s trip on twitter, you had to search #YoungAfrica! Her trip was dedicated to working with and empowering young African leaders to take action against hunger, HIV&AIDS, and poverty.

Brett and Stella working on a Niger Climate Change activity at the Action Center

Being part of the GCC Core this year, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting other students from different schools who shared the same interest in helping the world as I do. As co-leader of the Global Concerns club at Trevor Day School, my role consists of leading the club in discussions on pressing issues, running fundraising efforts, and reaching out to students through e-mails and assemblies in an effort to raise global awareness.

Club members from St Vincent Ferrer High School

As a freshman in St. Vincent Ferrer High School, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the Global Concerns Club, one of the most active clubs in school.  At the time, I had no idea that as a Senior I would have the amazing and unique opportunity to work in collaboration with club leaders from high schools around the city in the GCC Leadership Core.

GCC Leadership Core exploring climate change at the Action Center

I am glad that I was able to be a part of Global Concerns Club at St Vincent Ferrer High School (SVF). It has given me many opportunities for growth in my senior year at SVF. In addition to the many activities we were able to do in school, there were several opportunities where we were able to learn outside of the classroom with students from other schools.

What if you were uprooted out of your home to escape terror or war? What would you take with you?  What emotions would be running through your mind?  What if you knew you were being forced to leave your country for a cause that you had no control over?  Every year, millions of families must leave their home because of violence, natural disasters, their religion or race, heritage, or political ideas.

7th grade students from Laredo Middle School in Colorado learn about the MDGs and Africa

Concern Worldwide is an amazing organization that really brought learning to life and helped my 7th grade Humanities students develop a very strong passion to make a difference in this world.  Before we started our Africa unit, I was in touch with Concern’s Education Officer, Sylvia Wong, who helped me prepare some very hands on lessons for my students.
