In 2010, the Global Concerns Student Leadership Core was piloted to bring together GCC club leaders from various high schools in NYC  to connect and collaborate with one another and with Concern.

Brett and Stella working on a Niger Climate Change activity at the Action Center

Being part of the GCC Core this year, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting other students from different schools who shared the same interest in helping the world as I do. As co-leader of the Global Concerns club at Trevor Day School, my role consists of leading the club in discussions on pressing issues, running fundraising efforts, and reaching out to students through e-mails and assemblies in an effort to raise global awareness.

Club members from St Vincent Ferrer High School

As a freshman in St. Vincent Ferrer High School, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the Global Concerns Club, one of the most active clubs in school.  At the time, I had no idea that as a Senior I would have the amazing and unique opportunity to work in collaboration with club leaders from high schools around the city in the GCC Leadership Core.

GCC Leadership Core exploring climate change at the Action Center

I am glad that I was able to be a part of Global Concerns Club at St Vincent Ferrer High School (SVF). It has given me many opportunities for growth in my senior year at SVF. In addition to the many activities we were able to do in school, there were several opportunities where we were able to learn outside of the classroom with students from other schools.

Saint Jean Baptiste High School has recently began supporting Concern through many different fundraisers. For the past two years, Saint Jean has been a part of the Concern Fun Run. Every April, Concern hosts a run in Central Park. This walk is not only to fundraise but also to raise awareness of many issues in undeveloped nations. We had great success in raising money and more awareness in the school community.

Students and teachers at Trevor Day School's kick-off assembly for Help Haiti Heal week

After the devastating 2010 earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince, many schools were demolished, teachers were left jobless, and many children were left without a place to go to school. Trevor Day School students appeared on the CBS Early Show in January to raise awareness about the Concern/American Eagle campaign for education efforts in Haiti and model the t-shirts.

Club leaders Francesca, Sammie, and Brett brave the cold to "Help Haiti Heal" at the CBS Early Show

Many students wonder what gets accomplished in Trevor’s Global Concerns club. For those students unaware, the club works in partnership with Concern Worldwide, a non-profit organization working in the world’s poorest countries. At every meeting, Concern’s Education Officer, Sylvia Wong, informs club members on the current state of its “on the field” projects as well as informing them about new global issues that have arisen.
