Mother and child in Ethiopia

Today, the day after World Food Day, the United Nations encourages us to celebrate International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It’s no coincidence that the two observances fall so closely to one another! Poverty and hunger are closely intertwined. Everyday, the gap between rich and poor grows.

Melissa Bean at the Concern office!

Before I started working for Concern my general humanitarian involvement was limited to the community service club at my high school. Even though I’ve been on a three-week Student Ambassador trip to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji and traveled to South Africa, interning at Concern this summer was my first real foray into international service.

Part of me always hoped that the world wasn’t based on luck. I always suspected it was, but really hoped it wasn’t. I didn’t want the world to be ruled by arbitrary happenstance. But as I got older, I realized that I couldn’t believe that the world wasn’t simply dictated by luck if I wanted to believe that sometimes horrible things happen to perfectly good people.

The votes are in! The winners of Concern’s creative writing competition have been announced.

This year, the competition has truly become worldwide. We received 776 entries from 39 countries spanning five continents. Thanks to all those who took part. We had a very high standard of entries and our judges, top journalists from Ireland and the US, had an extremely difficult task in deciding the winners.

We started the competition to provide an opportunity for people to let us know, in a creative and engaging way, their thoughts and views on a wide range of development issues.
