Students and teachers at Trevor Day School's kick-off assembly for Help Haiti Heal week
After the devastating 2010 earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince, many schools were demolished, teachers were left jobless, and many children were left without a place to go to school. Trevor Day School students appeared on the CBS Early Show in January to raise awareness about the Concern/American Eagle campaign for education efforts in Haiti and model the t-shirts.

Many students wonder what gets accomplished in Trevor’s Global Concerns club. For those students unaware, the club works in partnership with Concern Worldwide, a non-profit organization working in the world’s poorest countries. At every meeting, Concern’s Education Officer, Sylvia Wong, informs club members on the current state of its “on the field” projects as well as informing them about new global issues that have arisen.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 that left 230,000 people dead, more than one million homeless, and 300,000 injured. Having worked in Haiti for 16 years, Concern immediately responded by distributing essential survival items that would reach over 96,000 people.

When news spread of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in early January of this year, many members of St. Jean Baptiste were moved to act. As the moderator of Student Council, I arrived at school the next day with many asking, “What are we going to do now? ” The students immediately sprung into action and began brainstorming on how best to raise awareness or collect donations.

Today – World Humanitarian Day – has special significance for me because I have spent the last 28 years, in one way or another, doing humanitarian work. So this is an opportunity to celebrate and commemorate the many humanitarian aid workers I have served with over the years.

Concern receives a check from Trevor Day School towards Haiti's recovery programs
On May 4th, 2010, Global Concerns Classroom went to Trevor Day School to give an update on Concern’s emergency work in Haiti. Since the January 2010 earthquake, the entire Trevor community has taken numerous fundraising initiatives throughout the school. Concern was invited to speak to the high school where a check was presented on behalf of the upper school.

Throughout the 2009-2010 school year, Trevor’s Global Concerns club has been working with Concern Worldwide on solving the water crisis in Haiti. As a club, we have been learning about the hardships that many children in Haiti undergo everyday, one of which being having to travel far distances for clean drinking water. As young adolescents ourselves, we, the students of Global Concerns felt the need to make a difference for those in Haiti.

Students from St. Jean Baptiste came out during their spring break to participate in the Run
On Saturday, April 10th, 2010 students and teachers from Trevor Day School and St. Jean Baptiste joined 1200 other runners in Central Park for Concern’s Run for Haiti. The Run for Haiti is Concern’s 13th annual run and this year, it raised over $125,000 towards emergency and long-term development work in Haiti.

Students at St. Vincent Ferrer High School have been learning about the water issue for the last few months during Global Concerns club meetings. Even before the January Haiti earthquake, club members were interested in exploring the water crisis and invested in raising awareness of this issue at school. The ultimate goal was to sponsor a well in Haiti through various fundraising initiatives.
