St. Jean’s hosted its second biennial Social Justice Day on March 29, 2011, a day aimed at educating our sophomores and juniors about issues of education, poverty, hunger, and water that our world faces daily and how they can begin to help affect change. This year the event was coordinated by our friends at Concern Worldwide, an international non-government organization that aims to end world hunger.

Weber Middle School’s Student Film Festival

Roger Thurow, co-author of "Enough: Why the World's Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty", opened the panel discussion on global hunger

Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, led off a distinguished panel on global hunger and Ireland’s preeminent role in fighting it by stressing that hunger “is not just about food”—but foremost about justice. The seminar on global hunger—sponsored by Self Help Africa and Concern Worldwide US— was held at the Irish Consulate in New York on May 21, 2010.

GCC Skype Presentation on Maternal Health

On Friday, May 30th, GCC facilitated our first Skype presentation on Concern’s Maternal and Child Health program with a class from the Gifted and Talented Program at Eastern Regional High School in New Jersey. Two seniors, Divya Shankar and Shikha Talwar, have been directing a Millennium Development Goal Initiative with their class called Project MDG: Make Dreams Grow.

Reflections on poverty and the MDGs bring back memories of a trip to New Orleans

I have been finding this unit on the Millennium Development Goals to be extremely interesting. As a fortunate youth living in NYC, I have come to understand that if I want to be socially involved in issues pertaining to the ones we discuss in Human Rights class, I am going to need to put myself out there. I am going to need to seek out information and be proactive and curious. I want to share a personal essay of mine.

NYC Lab School Students Ponder Poverty

Seniors in four human rights classes at the NYC Lab School have been studying the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a unit this semester. As a start, they read Jeffrey Sachs’ “The End of Poverty” together in class and discussed their thoughts on economic development and eliminating poverty.

GCC Annual Student Workshop 2010

Over 100 students from nine different NYC high schools gather at Fordham University to explore solutions to the global water crisis

For the second year in a row, Concern Worldwide teamed up with Fordham University’s Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs for Concern’s Global Concerns Classroom’s Annual Student Workshop, which was held on Feb 12 at the Fordham Law School in Manhattan. This year’s theme was: “Global Water Crisis: Exploring Solutions.”

Around the world, more than 1.1 billion people do not have access to a reliable and sustainable source of clean water.

Dalton MDG Student Workshop

One student group focused on MDG #6: combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other major diseases in Uganda

For the second year in a row, Global Concerns Classroom partnered with The Dalton School to facilitate a student workshop around the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the grade 7 classes. A few days before the workshop, GCC visited the grade 7 students with an introductory presentation on the MDGs given by Allyson Brown, Active Citizens Manager.
