As an American girl who grew up in the 90’s, fighting for women’s rights and gender equality never crossed my mind. I never had thoughts like, “Will my family survive if I go to school today” and I never had to cope with inequitable employment wages, financial or social security. I grew up in a world where the Women’s Suffrage Movement was just a lesson in American history.

Read. Eat. Sleep. Play sports. Play computer games. Text. Shop. Ride bikes and scooters. Complete homework. Watch movies. Go to zoos, parks, museums.  These are only several of the many things a child or teen usually does. At least, that is what most people think. Most of us classify those activities as what any ‘average, normal kid’ would do. But do we consider what those living in poverty are doing?

Many students wonder what gets accomplished in Trevor’s Global Concerns club. For those students unaware, the club works in partnership with Concern Worldwide, a non-profit organization working in the world’s poorest countries. At every meeting, Concern’s Education Officer, Sylvia Wong, informs club members on the current state of its “on the field” projects as well as informing them about new global issues that have arisen.

Concern Commits to Local Partners in Pakistan

It is a jarring experience landing in Islamad after the splendor of the Dubai airport en route. Ramshackle buildings and old, seemingly abandoned equipment on the scarred, patched-up tarmac greet the traveller on arrival. Going through customs and picking up luggage proves to be a lengthy and rather chaotic affair. The fatigue of almost a full day of travel and transit time is making itself felt.

Today – World Humanitarian Day – has special significance for me because I have spent the last 28 years, in one way or another, doing humanitarian work. So this is an opportunity to celebrate and commemorate the many humanitarian aid workers I have served with over the years.
