Sinead Naughton is a high school World History teacher and a Concern supporter and friend for many years! She has been an active GCC teacher, spear-heading a successful Global Concerns club at St. Vincent Ferrer for several years, and Concern supporter, rallying one of the largest teams to fund raise for Concern’s Spring Run each year.

I am glad that I was able to be a part of Global Concerns Club at St Vincent Ferrer High School (SVF). It has given me many opportunities for growth in my senior year at SVF. In addition to the many activities we were able to do in school, there were several opportunities where we were able to learn outside of the classroom with students from other schools.

Club members get ready to share about child malnutrition with Plumpy'nut tasting

Did you know 22,000 children die every day from preventable causes like malnutrition? Club members at St Vincent Ferrer High School decided to bring awareness of some of the issues facing child survival to their school community. As a start, to convey the gravity of the issue, club members made a banner filled with 22,000 dots to represent the number of child deaths that occur every day.

GCC Schools Fight Poverty in Spring Run

Students from Trevor Day School at Concern's Spring Run

On Saturday, April 9th, over 1,500 runners gathered together in Central Park to participate in Concern’s most highly-attended Spring Run. The annual event rallies individuals and teams to fundraise towards Concern’s programs through a fun 4-mile race. This year, six GCC schools participated, each school rallying club members and students to join the run and fundraise.

GCC Schools Stand Up Against Poverty 2010

Freshmen at Trevor Day School stand against poverty and recite the MDGs as a pledge

2010 is the 10-year mark since 189 world leaders gathered together to decide on the most pressing global issues that needed greater attention and collaboration on in order to reverse the effects and prevalence of poverty worldwide. These became the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), set to be achieved by 2015 with promises made by leaders to commit to development aid and partnership.

Global Concerns Club members at St. Vincent Ferrer High School ended the school year with a final project – to create a mural displaying their silhouettes with their thoughts on fighting poverty and being part of Global Concerns Club. The mural is meant to represent them to celebrate the end of another successful club year, but also to encourage others to participate and join next year.

St. Vincent Ferrer’s World Water Week

Students at SVF make a board game depicting a young girl's journey to fetch water and the possible obstacles she may face

Students at St. Vincent Ferrer High School have been learning about the water issue for the last few months during Global Concerns club meetings. Even before the January Haiti earthquake, club members were interested in exploring the water crisis and invested in raising awareness of this issue at school. The ultimate goal was to sponsor a well in Haiti through various fundraising initiatives.
