Sinead Naughton is a high school World History teacher and a Concern supporter and friend for many years! She has been an active GCC teacher, spear-heading a successful Global Concerns club at St. Vincent Ferrer for several years, and Concern supporter, rallying one of the largest teams to fund raise for Concern’s Spring Run each year.

For many years, GCC has partnered with NYC high schools to start Global Concerns clubs and to help students find creative ways to spread awareness of global issues and to take action. In 2010, the Global Concerns Student Leadership Core was piloted to bring together GCC club leaders from various high schools in NYC to connect and collaborate with one another and with Concern.

Being part of the GCC Core this year, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting other students from different schools who shared the same interest in helping the world as I do. As co-leader of the Global Concerns club at Trevor Day School, my role consists of leading the club in discussions on pressing issues, running fundraising efforts, and reaching out to students through e-mails and assemblies in an effort to raise global awareness.

Students from Trevor Day School at Concern's Spring Run
On Saturday, April 9th, over 1,500 runners gathered together in Central Park to participate in Concern’s most highly-attended Spring Run. The annual event rallies individuals and teams to fundraise towards Concern’s programs through a fun 4-mile race. This year, six GCC schools participated, each school rallying club members and students to join the run and fundraise.

After the devastating 2010 earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince, many schools were demolished, teachers were left jobless, and many children were left without a place to go to school. Trevor Day School students appeared on the CBS Early Show in January to raise awareness about the Concern/American Eagle campaign for education efforts in Haiti and model the t-shirts.

Many students wonder what gets accomplished in Trevor’s Global Concerns club. For those students unaware, the club works in partnership with Concern Worldwide, a non-profit organization working in the world’s poorest countries. At every meeting, Concern’s Education Officer, Sylvia Wong, informs club members on the current state of its “on the field” projects as well as informing them about new global issues that have arisen.

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 that left 230,000 people dead, more than one million homeless, and 300,000 injured. Having worked in Haiti for 16 years, Concern immediately responded by distributing essential survival items that would reach over 96,000 people.

On Saturday, Nov 20th, the community at Trevor Day School gathered for the annual Fall Festival. Sponsored by the Parent Association, the Fall Festival features a flea market, a cafe, and a carnival outside with games for children. Open to the public, the Fall Festival is a big attraction for Trevor families and neighboring Upper East Siders.

2010 is the 10-year mark since 189 world leaders gathered together to decide on the most pressing global issues that needed greater attention and collaboration on in order to reverse the effects and prevalence of poverty worldwide. These became the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), set to be achieved by 2015 with promises made by leaders to commit to development aid and partnership.

Concern receives a check from Trevor Day School towards Haiti's recovery programs
On May 4th, 2010, Global Concerns Classroom went to Trevor Day School to give an update on Concern’s emergency work in Haiti. Since the January 2010 earthquake, the entire Trevor community has taken numerous fundraising initiatives throughout the school. Concern was invited to speak to the high school where a check was presented on behalf of the upper school.
