World Refugee Day

Displacement camp in DRC

June 20, 2010 is World Refugee Day. There are 10.5 million refugees worldwide, with more than half in Asia and 22% in Africa (UNHCR, 2009).  Refugees are people who have fled their homes, crossing an international border, and cannot return because they fear their lives are in danger.

There are three possible solutions for all displaced people: returning home, local integration, or resettlement.

Returning Home – When circumstances enable displaced people to voluntarily return to their homes, it is important that they are able to return safely and with dignity.

Concern receives a check from Trevor Day School towards Haiti's recovery programs

On May 4th, 2010, Global Concerns Classroom went to Trevor Day School to give an update on Concern’s emergency work in Haiti. Since the January 2010 earthquake, the entire Trevor community has taken numerous fundraising initiatives throughout the school. Concern was invited to speak to the high school where a check was presented on behalf of the upper school.

Trevor's Global Concerns Club challenged students to walk 2 blocks with a jerry can of water as a fundraiser for water projects in Haiti

Sounds easy to walk two blocks with a jug of water? Wait till you try it… or watch the video to see how teachers and students at Trevor Day School fared during their H20 Walk FUNdraiser for Haiti on April 28 & 29, 2010. Sponsored walkers carried a full jerry can of water to experience a glimpse of what many children around the world face daily in order to get clean water.
